There are two types of convertible topping, vinyl and fabric. Proper care for each type is easy, but not the same. You must know what you have. FOR SURE.
THE PROBLEM:
Neither maintenance manuals nor car dealers give you this information. Heck, car makers don't tell their DEALERS what type of convertible topping they're selling, much less what proper care is. (What's the story with that? See below*)
So, guys and gals, here's what you do:
Get in your convertible, start the engine and drive over to your friendly neighborhood auto trim/upholstery shop.
Find one in the yellow pages if you need to (usually under "Upholsters").
The auto trim ship is who replaces damaged or worn out convertible tops. They can tell you in a second if you have a VINYL or FABRIC top and will be glad to.
You can take it from there.
*THE REST OF THE STORY
"My car dealer can't tell me for sure what type of convertible topping I have?what's the deal, anyway?"
Look back twenty years. Here in the U.S. convertibles were not very popular ... hadn't been for decades. Also, all the convertible topping up unti then was either black or dark blue ... with maybe a burgundy thrown in here and there.
Then two things changed. Convertibles began to become popular with Americans again, and consumer taste changed toward lighter colored tops.
Convertibles have become more popular ever since, breaking sales records each year, with no sign the trend is slowing. And consumers prefer light colored tops even more. What colors do you see the most? Off whites, light grays, light browns.
With the traditional black and dark blue tops, soiling was not an issue. Car makers didn't advise dealers and convertible buyers about proper care, and it was no big deal. Nobody noticed.
With today's light colored topping, though, soiling is a HUGE, HUGE issue. When today's top gets a little dirty, it SHOWS!
Car makers, though, haven't changed. They haven't yet caught up (or caught on). They're still not supplying their convertible buyer customers with what's necessary to keep their convertible tops clean, bright and looking like new?.which is what you get with the right products and proper care regimen. And you know what?
